In memory of Maria Whitehead
Supporting the HEADstrong Foundation

The Whitehead Family has joined forces with the HEADstrong Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to providing essential services to improve lives affected by cancer. The In5pire Hope Fund is a powerful initiative that will honor the extraordinary life of Maria Whitehead—a beloved daughter, teammate, coach, and champion—while advancing the HEADstrong Foundation’s mission to support families devastated by cancer. Together, we will help raise awareness and funds for the cause and will seek donations from family and friends, who were impacted by Maria.

Launched in partnership with Maria’s parents, Patti and Bill Whitehead, the In5pire Hope Fund will carry forward their daughter’s vibrant legacy by mobilizing the field hockey community to make a meaningful impact. This initiative is rooted in Maria’s fighting spirit, her passion for life, and her unyielding commitment to others. The number 5, which Maria proudly wore at Wake Forest University, will serve as a symbol and heartbeat of the campaign.

A two-time All-ACC selection and catalyst behind Wake Forest’s first-ever NCAA Field Hockey National Championship in 2002, Maria was a fierce competitor, a loyal friend, and a leader who inspired those around her—on and off the field. Standing only 5 feet tall and weighing just 105 pounds, her tenacity was unmatched. “Any time, any day, any opponent,” she once told Coach Jen Averill, who would later describe Maria as “a pistol” whose actions and words left a permanent mark on everyone she encountered.
After graduation, Maria became the youngest collegiate head coach in the country and went on to join the coaching staff at Duke University, even as she waged a private battle with stage IV melanoma. Despite enduring multiple brain surgeries and aggressive treatments, Maria rarely missed a game or practice, embodying optimism, resilience, and service until her final breath on November 1, 2006.
Now, nearly two decades later, Maria’s legacy will live on through the In5pire Hope Fund—offering financial assistance, free lodging, and critical support to families displaced by cancer treatment in the Research Triangle and beyond, including through Nick’s House Durham.

“Maria believed in people. She believed in possibilities. She believed in the power of team. The In5pire Hope Fund is about channeling her legacy to create that same belief in others—especially in families fighting for their lives and student-athletes fighting for their dreams.”
- Pat Colleluori, Chief Development Officer of the HEADstrong Foundation.

In addition to its direct impact on families, the In5pire Hope Fund will ignite a movement across the field hockey landscape through events, dedication games, and collegiate field hockey initiatives. These efforts will raise critical funds, spread awareness about melanoma prevention, and unify programs across the country in a shared mission of resilience and service.
Each year, Wake Forest Field Hockey presents the Maria Whitehead Award, recognizing a player who exemplifies her unrelenting courage and heart. The In5pire Hope Fund takes this legacy one step further—transforming Maria’s story into a national platform for change.
Through the In5pire Hope Fund, Maria Whitehead will continue to inspire hope, ignite hearts, and impact lives for generations to come.
